This time of year we remember and exalt the Name above every name (Philippians 2:9-11), the name of JESUS! There is no other name under heaven by which you must be saved (Acts 4:12). Teach your children that this great name translates literally to “God saves” or “God is salvation”. To think that our loving Father in heaven would sacrifice His own Son for us is mind-blowing.
Names are so important biblically. They all have great meaning. David means beloved; Isaac means laughter; Hannah means grace. Explain the meaning of bible names to your children. Each one of our six children has a name meaningful to us as parents. We prayerfully selected their first and middle names. We have discovered that they often match the definition of their name.
In the book of Revelation the church of Philadelphia (the faithful church) is told this regarding names: “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.” (Revelation 3:12, emphasis added) This is really something. What is God’s new name? We don’t now know. Regardless, there is an importance given to names in this passage of scripture.
Isaiah 9:6 reads this way: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (emphasis added) Wow! 5 names for Jesus in half of a verse!
Make no mistake about it; names matter and the name of our Lord is the most powerful name in the entirety of heaven and earth because it’s the only name that saves. This Christmas season the Children’s Church will be teaching a 4-week Christmas series entitled “You shall call His name Jesus”. Please see the schedule below and take a few minutes to go over the lessons with your children. Merry Christmas and God bless your family! We love you and are praying for your family.
