At Koinonia we go through the Bible verse-by-verse, precept-by-precept. Right now we are reading through the book of 2 Peter every Sunday at 8:30 and 10:30am. Join us as we study how Peter exhorts believers to beware of false doctrines and to be pure in faith by knowing the Scriptures and staying in the Lord.
This letter is addressed to the same network of churches as Peter’s first letter and was likely sent from the same location in Rome. This letter acts as Peter’s farewell speech, as he writes that he has become aware that he is going to die soon. The evidence we have from early tradition is that he was executed by the Roman authorities during the reign of emperor Nero around AD 60.
Peter begins the letter by challenging Jesus’ followers to never stop growing. This is followed by warnings about the growing number of corrupt teachers who are leading Christians astray through their twisted way of life as well as by their distorted theology. In each of these sections, Peter counters accusations made by these leaders against himself and the other apostles. His goal is to restore confidence and order to these church communities. Something we still need today!
